For those in the dark about the recent buzz, let's recap. In the last week or 2, we've learned a couple of things about Nathan Fillion and how he'd spend the loot if won the California State Lottery. He would:
1. Buy the rights to our beloved Firefly, produce new stories and bring it to the web.
2. Buy some commercials for Castle so you couldn't watch TV without seeing one.
You can't say the man's not dedicated to his work. In response to those comments, the creators started chiming in. Firefly writer Jose Molina wrote on Twitter: "For what it's worth, I've told him I'd drop what I was doing and follow." Then, Whedonverse writer Jane Espenson tweeted "I'm there, if needed." Kaylee herself, Jewel Staite, responded when a Twitter follower asked if she'd be on board: "Is the Pope Catholic? Hee! Why yes he is, Miss Staite.
As per usual, once the interwebs got hold of all this very exciting information, the regular uproar of "Bring back Firefly" campaigns surfaced. It looks like after all the hubbub, Fillion might have received some personal checks, money orders or I.O.Us or something, as the Cap'n himself, tweeted:
"It's beautiful to dream of more Firefly, but PLEASE DON'T SEND ANY MONEY. Just keep being great Browncoats, which you are!"
And there you have it! Keep the dream of Firefly alive along with your hard earned money...for now.

...this time with "Scott Allie Cam!" That's right, Scott Allie is at the TFAW Firefly/Serenity signing, screening and panel right now and he's sharing with us live pics from his POV at the event. It's like you're there! Except Zack Whedon and Chris Samnee are not actually sitting next to you on your sofa right now. And you're not in Portland's Hollywood Theater. But look! Pics!
"Signing, and, I think, Chris being asked for money by the homeless guy who came in to eat. Seriously."

That's all! This event was sponsored by TfAW, Dark Horse, Bridgetown, Excalibur, and PDX Browncoats! They also helped the Oregon Food Bank as cost of admission was a canned or nonperishable food item.
Thanks for bringing us behind the scenes, Scott!

The Preamble: There are two things I do not typically consider myself to be: a browncoat or a fan of Derrial Book. I watched Firefly, sure. I saw Serenity in theaters. But unlike most Whedon fans out there, I never quite made that visceral connection to that world and those characters. Book, especially, was someone I never identified with. So imagine my surprise when this graphic novel went on to be the best Firefly comic to come out thus far. Rather than the usual synopsis then review format, I'm going to do it all in one section so, heads up, some spoilers are headed your way.
The Review: This story is sort of like peeling back the layers of a life. We start with the surface and we go deeper, and deeper, right down to the core of what makes a man. We open with Book's final moments and, as we do when we're fictional characters, with his lasts breaths he reflects on what brought him to this moment.
First on the journey back, unsurprisingly, is Serenity and it's here where Zack and Joss excel best. It may just be that every one of those characters was so perfectly cast but, truly, every voice is pitch perfect. There's a little something for people who like Jayne and River, plenty of love for the Kaylee fans, and a great moment involving Mal and Zoe beating the snot out of someone who saw fit to cross them.

Back further. And drunk. Derrial is forcibly removed from the local dive bar I assume he is not unknown to frequent when an Alliance officer recognizes him. The officer mentions his little brother and the tragedy that befell him on the I.A.V. Alexander. And again I say FOREBODING!
Before we move backwards again, we get what is the defining moment where Book discovers his own spirituality. It's all done through the analysis of a bowl of soup and its place in the universe. Yup. This has got Joss's fingerprints all over it. The man loves to explain life through food. He should write a cookbook. It would be called "We're All Going to Die but, SHIT, this tastes delicious!"
Let's go back a little further. How does "Officer Book" sound to you? Now we're getting somewhere. And by "somewhere" I mean "Book having his ship retreat leaving behind who knows how many Alliance soldiers to die." This on its own is an interesting layer because it is completely different from the original assumption most people had. Everyone thought Book was a hero to the Alliance. Turns out he is a total failure. Or is he?
So we peel back further to when Book is starting out in the Alliance and, damn, he sure does like beating information out of people, even when it isn't necessary. In fact, as we go back even further, we see that hitting things is a bit of a Derrial Book specialty.

But before that I want to quote the end of the story where we see how this character started out. A kid, getting beat on the regular by his drunken pops, running away from home. He walks down a deserted alley (sound familiar?) He thinks to himself:
"You see, this life is a fight and if you sit still, someone will get the drop on you. They'll pin you down. I won't let that happen. I'll protect myself, take what I need, and keep moving. Because it's every man for himself. Get out of my way.
This life is mine."
I think that says it all, really, doesn't it? Sure there are some moments that felt a little wasted and unnecessary, but there are so many revelations about this character. Like so much of the Firefly universe, he is now whole, complete. Which is the best thing about this whole brownout thing Joss crafted. It's his most cohesive work and he did it in far less time than anything else he's ever created. Book was out there in "don't know, don't care" land for so long but now? He's fascinating! I love that there's this selfishness at the root of him. I love that he sacrificed countless lives for a greater good he wasn't even sure of. There's something so vain and awful and brilliant and human about him now that I never knew until right now. So thanks to the Whedon bros (for whom there should be an 8-bit style side-scroller made) and thanks to Chris Samnee for giving the whole thing this great murky feel that fit the story just right.
Go pick it up, if you haven't already. And Scott? Get Zack and Joss to make more. Beg if you must. Because this? This was great.

We got them, we read them and we've got something to say about them...not too much, though. Nothing spoilery, just teasingly tantalizing.
With the last few issues of Buffy moving in fast, we'll be having preview nights for each of the remaining stories to get everyone hyped for what we can only guess will be a painful, shocking and brain-crushing Buffy Season Finale. Stay tuned for those. Here are our thoughts for Issue #38:
Michelle: So, I see where this is going and all roads are definitely leading to badness. Poor everyone. Oh, and if that lioness is supposed to be Buffy and Angel's offspring, I just don't see the resemblance.
Bitsy: I can't believe they killed...
Tara: Um guys? I'm scrrred.
It's been a busy week in the Whedonverse with the additional release of the long awaited story of our favorite Preacher in, A Shepherd's Tale.
Michelle: This story was written really well. The character voices are spot on. I love Sheperd Book in all his complicated glory and it's complicated for sure.
Bitsy: I thought Angel made some questionable choices for the greater good but, damn, just... damn.
Tara: This is a nice one! When I finished reading the last page, I felt myself needed that next one more than I have in a long time. Oh, and the art in this is just beautiful.

We've always wanted to do this and at San Diego Comic Con we had our chance. Every time we saw a Jayne Hat, we asked the owner of the head that held the beloved Jayne Hat for a photo. Asking to snap a pic of someone's hand knit JH always sparked a fandom conversation. Of course, there were many, MANY more than shown below, but with all the chaos we kept missing our chances. "Oh! Jayne Hat!", Michelle would say...but there they went. Off with their fuzzy orange heads to the Dr. Horrible sing-along or to a signing at the Dark Horse booth or wherever. We'll get those guys next time. Until then, Jayne Hats!

How great is this? Artist JOEBOT has created an amazing album cover in honor of Firefly & Serenity for Gallery 1988's 4th annual "Crazy 4 Cult" show in LA. Check out the piece below entitled "River Tam and the Fireflies". It's so fantastic, I may have to buy it with real money!
LOVE!! Go over to his etsy store to purchase a print of the cover for $20, which is a steal!
And if you're in the LA area on July 9th go check out the gallery opening and this Browncoat homage itself. Kevin Smith will be there as the host for the evening too. Here are the deets:

We are very proud to announce that Buffyfest will once again be a global sponsor for this year's Can't Stop the Serenity events, their 5th anniversary! This is our second year supporting the cause, which supports Equality Now through their awesome fund raising events around the world. The events give fans a chance to see the “Big Damn Movie” on the big screen, while helping to protect human rights of women around the world. From their site:
Founded in 2006, this year marks the notable 5th anniversary of Can’t Stop the Serenity. From a fledgling idea from the One True B!x to the multi-national event it has become, there is no doubt that, far from getting old, Serenity continues to draw crowds and good Samaritans from near and far: each screening donates money to Equality Now and other great causes while giving like-minded folks the opportunity to help charities without ever leaving a theater! With the fifth year off to a great start, its about time you see what all the fuss is about.
In addition to watching Serenity, and at some events, Dr. Horrible, this year 7 lucky cities will also be screening Browncoats: Redemption – A Fan Film for Charity, which will be released in September 2010.
The fun has already started in San Francisco which kicked off the CSTS season with the first event last weekend! Click here to find an event in your area. The official website is updated daily with registered cities and their ticket status...but if there isn't an event in your city, you could always host your own - no matter how small!

When Twitterer @monkeyonthelam issued the following tweet: "I wish there was a comprehensive list of the last line said by every dead Whedonverse character. I love lists, but that would be a lot of work"...we took that as a personal challenge. At least to come up with 25 of 'em. Well, this gets a bit lengthy so let's get to it.
...but before we do, we'd like to point out that during our research we realized there are many a great characters that do not really get a last line. The final thing they say may be a scene or 2 before the actual death or some-such. This includes: Anya, Buffy (the 1st time), Kendra (she's hypnotized), Jenny Calendar, Larry, Jonathan, Joyce, etc. Since they didn't get the glory of a last lick, why not make one up for them and leave it in the comments?
Without further ado, Buffyfest presents: Last Lines of the Dead.
Jesse: - "You don't have the guts." - The Harvest

Principal Flutie: - "Are you insane?!" - The Pack
Darla: "Angel?" - Angel
Uncle Enyos: "I suppose you want answers." - Innocence
Angel (Becoming): "Quickly, you have to send me to Hell to stop Acathla, Buffy" (reportedly, all but the last word were "indicated with his eyes" [sic]). - Becoming Part 2
Mr. Trick: "Oh, no. No, this is no good at all." - Consequences
The Mayor: "Well, gosh." - Graduation Day Part 2
Magie Walsh: "Adam?" - The I in Team
Adam: "How...can you?" - Primeval

Buffy: "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it" - The Gift
Tara: "Your shirt..." - Seeing Red
Spike: "I want to see how it ends." - Chosen
Warren: "I know you're in pain, but-" - Villains
VampWillow: "Aw, f..." Doppelgangland
Darla (again): ""This Child, it's the one good thing we ever did together. You make sure to tell him that." - Dad
Lindsey: "You kill me? A flunky?! I'm not just... Angel...kills me. You don't... Angel..." - Not Fade Away
Mr. Universe: "They can't stop the signal, Mal. They can never stop the signal." - Serenity
Wash: "I'm a leaf on the wind. Watch how..." - Serenity
Shepherd Book: "I don't care what you believe. Just believe it. Whatever you..." - Serenity
